Who we are

Welcome to the Harvard Club Rhein-Ruhr!

The Harvard Club Rhein-Ruhr was founded in 1968 by a group of American and German Alumni of Harvard University and for many years has been the only active Harvard Club in Germany. The club members have either studied or are involved in programs at Harvard University, have been teaching as professors, lecturers, assistant professors or in other roles for and at Harvard. We also welcome individuals who have been connected to Harvard in other, distinguished ways. A majority of our members lives in the greater Rhein-Ruhr area, but we also have members from other parts of Germany or abroad. Our distinguished founding member was Professor Dr. Ludwig Erhard ( † 1977), former chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The objectives of the Club are to promote the welfare of Harvard University, particularly by attracting, advising and assisting suitable young people interested in studying at Harvard, and to foster social and fraternal fellowship among Harvard men and women and connect them with other German-American institutions. Harvard Club Rhein-Ruhr offers regular events to discuss significant political, social and cultural topics with leading authorities in their respective fields from academia, politics, business and cultural institutions.

For example, the Club and guests which been introduced by members in recent years dealt with the United States, Russia and China, the European Union, the European currency and German foreign policy, international security and global corruption, Jewish-German relationships, the 'Clash of Civilizations', Islam and Europe, topics of the Christian Churches, and educational challenges. The Club participates in distinguished cultural events and regular members gatherings in various settings to discuss Club issues and build relationships.
